The unusual shape of the tabletop in this fine still life reflects the changing viewpoint Maurer adopted while painting the picture. Like Cézanne, Maurer’s compositions often show shifting perspectives within the same painting, e.g. Paul Cézanne, 1839-1906, Still Life With Apples and Pears, Metropolitan Museum # 61.101.3.
